Fiona and I went to Oberlin together and also “studied away” at the same program in Manhattan for a semester, where we shared a room. I use the term room generously because it was so small we could not even fit two twin beds next to each other (no really, not even if we left no space in between them), so we had to bunk them. I think of our time there as endless summer camp because well, we were grown women in bunk beds and we would often stay up half the night talking and giggling about this or that.
We traipsed around NYC together and bar-hopped and laid in the park and drank a lot of pumpkin spice lattes. She introduced me to Pearl Paint in Chinatown and the word muffin as a term of endearment. She moved back to NYC after graduation and the past couple years we have seen each other regularly by traveling back and forth. It’s going to be difficult being so far away and relying on phone dates and it was such a delight to see her muffinface this weekend.
