Dear Sarah Palin,

I know every politician stretches their resume – sadly, I’ve learned to expect even outright lies. However, as someone who believes strongly in the power of service (to one’s country, family, community), this line – “I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.” – about sent me over the edge. Since when is it acceptable to mock people who are on the ground, doing often incredibly difficult work to help struggling neighborhoods and make people’s lives a little bit better?

I donated again last night at the end of your speech. But this time, I’ve decided giving more money isn’t enough. I plan on signing up this evening to spend a weekend in Nevada for the Obama campaign. Just wanted to thank you for giving me the swift kick in the pants I needed!

Dear San Francisco Fog, 

Everyone told me you were going to be the one thing about the Bay Area that made me crazy. Perhaps it’s because every evening I return to the sunny shores of Oakland, but I find you unfailingly magical. You give the air the delicious bite of perpetual fall, you blur the edges of my photographs, you tease mystery out of ordinary objects. The view from the Bay Bridge is impressive when it’s clear, but when you’re around? I feel like my commute takes me through a storybook world on the way to the office.

Dear Yoyo’s,

Thanks to you guys, I get to eat avocado sushi for lunch almost every day. It costs me $2.75. You learned my name and order after I’d been in there twice (even though sometimes I mix it up a bit and order the Vegetarian Box, but only when I’m particularly flush as it costs a whopping $3.50). Every time I show up you thank me and treat me like I’m handing over much more than three crumpled dollar bills. I love you guys for giving me an economic reason not to pack a lunch because man, I really hate packing lunches.

Do you think you could maybe make a non fish-based broth? I’d really like to try your Udon.
