In Big Sur, the beautiful, hike-in campsite is at Julia Pfeiffer Burns state park, south garden. We had environmental site #2. Site #1 is closest to the ocean. Bring your own bear container or be prepared to surrender to the raccoons. Since we got back home I read that the Ventana wilderness organization offers guided walks, including one to visit the condor. Ventana is within the Big Sur area. We saw a sign from highway 1 toward Ventana. Wow! I didn’t read this when you posted, but ‘camping trip with friends’ reminds me.
