If you’re having a rough day week month, might I recommend sleeping in late on a Saturday, pouring coffee into a thermos, grabbing your darling husband and spending the day winding through small towns on backcountry roads, tasting red zinfindels & syrahs straight out of the barrel and chatting with winemakers at tiny wineries before climbing up a hill to a round red barn, sitting on the edge and watching the sun set over the hills?

It’s really difficult to photograph redwoods, especially if, like me, you lack a wide-angle lens. It’s almost impossible to convey just how immense they are, even when providing a bit of scale.

See what I mean? I can’t even get Steve and the upper third of the trees in the same frame!

I think the only solution is to come visit and see them for yourself. Yes?

San Francisco, as seen from the East Bay. Taken out of the moving car, shot through a chainlink fence (hence the totally awesome texture). I love photographing from the car because the foreground blurs, but the background doesn’t, which creates images that feel alive.

Living near the water here is a bit different than say, Florida. When we go to the beach now, I bring two blankets, one to lay on….and one to cover up with. It is windy and foggy and often bitingly cold.

But it is also rugged and a bit violent and breathtakingly beautiful and makes me want to take long walks wearing a bundled scarf and fingerless gloves, camera in hand.

So few days left until I get my life back. I know I’ve taken an unofficial hiatus, and I apologize as I now have to make it an official one. I pretty much spend all my time at either work or the Obama Headquarters and I find that at the end of my very long days, I have nothing left to give here. But fear not, I shall be back soon.

I leave you with this song, which is my current lullaby. In my fellow volunteers I’ve found something incredible – other pragmatic dreamers! I dedicate it to everyone who has put their heart & soul (& time & money) into this campaign – here’s to making it happen, one phone call, door knock, vote at a time.

See you on the other side of November 4th.
